Troubleshooting 101

Everything was going great until it wasn’t. My early thoughts when I decided to create this website was more or less to share or briefly highlight the work I was doing and not so much as a how-to or step by step repair procedure. To further explain, I should update my current situation.

So while I was working out the cooling issues and waiting for some replacement parts that were on order, I decided that it was time to clean the garage. Since the car had been sitting up since winter and early spring it was long overdue. Now that it was finally running I could move it outside under its own power and out of the way. Easy enough.

So that is precisely what I did. It started up perfect. I drove it out of the garage and parked it. Pressure washed out the garage and let it dry out for about an hour. Started the car again, no problems. Pulled it back into the garage and parked it.

The next day I needed to move it again so I could get started on removing some of the body trim. It started fine as expected. I put it into drive and nothing. No movement. I ran it thorough every gear and still nothing. It was not moving. This is really strange I thought. What is going on here? Why is this thing not moving?

I began checking all of the fuses and all of the connections going to the transmission. I cleaned all of the electrical connections. I checked the transmission servicing. Nothing! Everything was fine. Nothing damaged — no faulty fuses. The fluid level was fine.

So I began running through the principle of operations. It has fluid and the fluid powers the transmission which drives the gears. The torque converter drives the pump, which provides fluid pressure. Then I began retracing the engine removal and installation steps, and the only thing I could think of was something was wrong with the torque converter. Did I install it correctly?
