2007 Volkswagen Jetta Wolfsburg Edition

This project was supposed to be easy, or so I thought. I picked this car up in South Alabama after it had been abandoned for over a year. It has low mileage, which is good if I plan on selling this. I was able to get it to start for a few minutes before it stalled, so I knew that the motor was not locked up. It definitely needed a tune-up and a lot of cleaning. As far as I knew, it had no major mechanical issues just some cosmetic and electrical issues. Pretty much every light on the instrument cluster was illuminated, and the windows did not roll down nor did the doors lock.

First Look

At first glance, this car is in rough shape, and I would be lying if I said it wasn’t. Other than the exterior and interior being covered in mold. The hood, driver’s side headlight, and fender are damaged from what looks like a collision. The interior has seen better days. Every door panel insert is falling off, including the headliner. I believe this is typical for most of the MK5 Jetta and Golfs. Not sure exactly what causes this, but my best guess is the glue they use during manufacturing. The driver’s seat upholstery is almost completely worn away. But I think with a lot of cleaning and detailing, I can bring this one back to life.

Tear down

The only way to really clean and repair any issues with this car is to take it apart completely. All the seats, center console, carpet, and interior trim pieces have been removed, including the headliner. The front and rear bumper covers have been removed. The front fenders, headlights, and radiator core support have been removed. The front driver’s side’s damage went deeper than just exterior damage. The core support was cracked, as well as the bracket that holds the headlight. So the whole core support will need to be replaced.

Tune-Up

Before getting this thing on the road, I needed to take care of a few things. Along with replacing the brake pads and detailing the calipers with POR 15 I went through the engine and did a 150,000-mile tune-up. I replaced all the spark plugs. Changed the oil and filter with Liqui Moly. Flushed the coolant system. Drained the fuel tank. Replaced the cabin and engine air filter. Also, while I had the front end torn apart, I detailed the engine from top to bottom.

Headliner

This was the first headliner that I have ever done. I would say that it was easy, but for the most part, I can say it was. It was a little frustrating getting it laid out and as straight as possible. The headliner turned out great, though.
